ETHICS
Robert Pelton, Ethics Committee Chairman
In 2011, I got the idea for a hotline/help line for our members and members of HCCLA. It was well received by those who were then in charge. Since then I have received many calls to the hotline and me personally from many who know I am the leader of our group. Some of the calls have been for small simple questions and some complex questions. I have chosen some of the brightest lawyers I know to help. I also explicitly trust them all. We have together solved all the problems sent to us. Some of the calls have not been about ethics or cases but about personal problems, so we have become almost a suicide hotline. In the past almost 10 years, I can say we’ve saved the lives of at least two lawyers from suicide because they called our hotline.

The calls are answered within 24 hours. Many are returned in minutes. Michael Mowla helped me solve a problem during his lunch break in a major murder trial. This is serious business to all of us, just as it is when we are representing citizens accused of crimes.

Our world is now in the middle of a medical crisis that none of us have ever seen. There is fear and anxiety everywhere in our country and in our state. None of us know what the absolute answers are or what the future holds. Those of us on the hotline ask that you abide by the instructions to avoid crowds and keep your hands clean and the other instructions we have been told about. I also ask you put and keep your faith in our creator and ask for personal guidance from Him. We on the hotline are available 24/7 to help you if you need guidance or just to talk to another person. Please do not be embarrassed to call.

The calls are confidential. All of us need help from time to time. Remember: No man is an island.
