Law School Student Charles Butts Memorial Scholarship $6,000
TCDLEI Charles Butts Memorial Scholarship Requirements for Eligibility:
- Student must be a 3L law student with a demonstrated interest in Criminal Law, especially Criminal Defense.
- Student must write a statement regarding their views on the criminal defense role in our criminal justice system—no more than two pages, double spaced.
- Student must submit a recommendation letter from a TCDLA member.
- Student must submit recommendation letter from a Professor/Instructor in law school.
- Students should also articulate in one paragraph their background and/or need for funds.
- Student must express intent to practice criminal defense in Texas for the next five years.

Texas 78736. The Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Educational Institute (TCDLEI) exists to promote and support the administration of justice in Texas, particularly through the continuing legal education of criminal defense lawyers and staff.
Application Deadline December 20th. – we have received one application to date. We will be adding to the criteria on the application that they must practice in Texas when graduating. Will make an announcement at the TCDLA Board meeting asking board members/professors to share the information about a $6k scholarship. Many scholarship recipients have become very active and engaged in TCDLA after receiving a scholarship, this is funded by Sam Bassett, and we appreciate his continued contribution.
